Sylvia Hastanan

Meet Sylvia, our Executive in Residence.

Sylvia has a talent for marrying clinical and business operations, translating that into value. Sylvia has spent her career trying to “fix healthcare,” aiming to solve struggling rising costs and uneven quality. With patients and providers at top of mind, she took on roles to systematically transform the care delivery model for both the payer and the provider. She has a deep understanding of the health care system, specifically in managed care and value-based models.  As an operator, Sylvia has pioneered medical management programs that address the needs of the highest risk patients. As a strategist, she has developed innovative initiatives to improve provider burnout, patient experience, evidence-based practice, and leadership development. Sylvia has partnered with healthcare leaders across the country and has led nationwide initiatives for large multi-state groups like OptumCare, DaVita Medical Group, and Healthcare Partners.

Most recently, Sylvia led OptumCare’s Office for Provider Advancement (OPA), as Vice President of Clinical Strategy. Prior to the Optum acquisition, Sylvia innovated high risk programs at HealthCare Partners and after DaVita acquired the medical group, she established the Office of the Chief Medical Officers (OCMO), to guide the clinical integration of best practices across the group’s six markets. In prior roles, Sylvia has worked as a consultant in advisory firms focused on Value Transformation, Population Health, Care Model Design, ACOs, Clinically Integrated Networks, and Revenue Cycle Management. Sylvia also ran the clinical operations for a start-up company focused on deploying in-home high risk programs for at-risk organizations around the country.

Sylvia graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a focus on Healthcare Management, a joint-program between the nursing school and Wharton School of Business. She is a California native and currently resides in Manhattan Beach with her husband and three young girls.

Together with Optum Ventures, Sylvia hopes to transform the way we delivery care to our patients.
